Based in San Francisco California, Alta Motors manufactures high performance motorcycles for the dirt, the track, and the urban tear through the streets. The bikes also happen to be electric.
The Redshift owes its speed and endurance to the custom battery pack which powers it all. The Alta Pack crams 5.8 kWh into 30.8 kilos with a maximum of 350V: mile for mile, there is no smaller, more energy dense battery pack in transportation. Our battery team gave themselves three years to develop and commercialize wholly new technologies to achieve the performance and safety we demanded of an off-road race bike. The Alta Pack is waterproof – rated up to IP67. It is durable enough to handle impacts and vibrations up to 20G, and it is digitally self-monitoring. Our stacked, honeycomb architecture allows for extreme energy density at 185 watt hours per kilogram. This paired with a unique thermal wicking system to shed heat faster than any other lithium-ion transportation battery in production, gives the Redshift the edge you want on the track.
Alta’s water-cooled 14,000 RPM motor is pound for pound one of the most powerful in motorsports. It is optimized to the narrow width of the Redshift’s bulkhead and is precisely located at the roll center of the bike. This placement allows for the lowest polar moment of inertia in motorcycling – drastically minimizing any gyroscopic impediment to handling.The Redshift’s motor weighs 15lbs and puts out 40hp and 36 ft-lbs of torque. The unit pushes power through a 3.5:1 gear reduction to deliver a 122 ft-lbs of torque at the counter shaft from a dead stop and 0 RPM.The Redshift delivers enough torque to lift the front wheel whenever you need to, and it corners like nothing you’ve ever ridden. The faster you go, the more of an advantage you have. And if you want to go fast, this motor will take you there.
The Redshift Bulkhead—the chassis core—functions as the outer motor casing, the cooling circuit for the motor and inverter, as well as the transmission case for the gear reduction. Additionally, it is the main structural hub, connecting to the rear suspension, the airframe, the forged monocoque chassis, and the trellis skidframe. All of this integration is coordinated with very specific strength, weight, and stiffness goals to produce the right ride and compliance characteristics at all lean angles, and under impact.
Frame & Swingarm
Every component of the Redshift chassis and drivetrain is designed from the ground up by Alta’s engineers to achieve maximum strength and efficiency per pound. By refining and combining off-the-shelf concepts, we increased the functionality of each element of our motorcycles and simultaneously reduced weight, build complexity, and potential for failures. These innovative designs give the Redshift the strength riders need with the speed and agility riders desire.
Alta’s proprietary, water-cooled motor controller is a clean sheet design. Both the hardware and the software were developed in-house to integrate seamlessly with our high-speed, permanent-magnet, brushless motor. The controller transfers a direct, instant connection between the rider’s throttle hand and the rear tire. The relationship between the controller and the electric motor allows riders to tune their bikes’ power to their riding conditions and riding style. Through pre-programmed throttle maps, riders can adjust the rate of acceleration and amount of engine braking to respond to changing conditions like hard-pack, turning to mud.
Suspension & Brakes
Where existing components meet our performance standards, we utilize the best that the motorcycle world has to offer. Brembo brakes and WP suspension with a rising-rate linked rear suspension means the bike is up for anything you can throw at it, and that spare parts and top notch tuners are readily available.
Alta engineers have re-imagined the ideal off-road subframe structure: strong, light, durable, and comfortable. Without a need to combat hot exhaust systems, the core of Alta’s subframe could be made of Makroblend®, a resin engineered for exceptional durability. The Airframe allows the system to be compliant for rider comfort, and to bounce back rather than bend or break in a crash. To achieve a more efficient (i.e. lighter, stronger) structure, we designed a system of internal ribs and a stressed skin similar to that of an airplane fuselage. The Redshift Airframe performs with multiple times the strength of a standard aluminum or polymer subframe.

Alta Motors has spent six years designing an entirely new motorcycle experience. Alta focuses on seamlessly integrating high-tech designs, incorporating quality components, and keeping as much of this work as we can in our community. We pride ourselves on creating awesome motorcycles and employing Americans to do it. The Redshift comes in two models – a street-legal supermoto, and a trail-ready motocross. Alta hopes to see these bikes change the way people commute during the week and change how and where they ride on the weekend.
Alta’s founders never set out to make an electric motorcycle. Our goal was always to make a bike that would make riders – of all skill levels – better. After considering every angle of available technology, we realized that an electric motor would perform best as it gives the rider total control with linear and immediate power delivery. WHO IS THIS FOR?
People often wonder if the Redshift is made for pros or beginners, and the answer is, both. The Redshift’s electric drivetrain enables riders to control throttle response and engine braking through preloaded software options which can be altered through the controls incorporated into the handlebars. Not needing to shift allows riders to focus completely on picking their lines and improving their technique. Whether it is your first time or your thousandth time on a motorcycle, the Redshift will fit your personal riding style and allow you to ride better.
Batteries and electric vehicle technology has progressed at incredible rates in recent years, but some people still don’t believe an electric motorcycle can match that of a gas bike. WHAT IS THE GAS EQUIVALENT OF THE REDSHIFT?
The Redshift platform was originally designed to compete with the 250 class of motocross bikes, and through the evolution of the design, we’ve come to realize that the Redshift does a lot of things very well. The Redshift MX makes for an incredible bike on the trail, tackling hillclimbs, racing flat track and competing in EnduroCross. The Redshift SM is as equally capable racing on tight tracks as it is getting across the city in a rush hour commute. Because of this, drawing a parallel to an equivalent gas bike isn’t the easiest thing to do. While we consider the Redshift an electric 250 equivalent, it will out accelerate a KTM 690 Enduro. Ultimately, the Redshift MX & SM will be sanctioned by the AMA for competition in the 250 class, but our best advice is to visit a local dealer and demo either Redshift model.

Reserve your Redshift here. We began production of the Redshift MX in August of 2016. Currently, reserving your bike is the best way to secure one; however, motorcycles will be available for order through Alta’s dealer network later this year.
